Tis The Season.....

"Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."  ~Norman Vincent Peale

A very special 'Thank You' to all my visitors of this blog over the past year.  I wish each of you peace, goodwill and happiness this holiday season and in 2017!

As is my tradition each year,  I'm taking the next few weeks off from all social media.  I will tackle an unfinished project, then I look forward to some "quiet time" to review this past year's achievements and to plan and prepare my goals for the coming year.  And of course, I will be enjoying some extra family time.

Meet Abigail - My Newest Floral Painting

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be usefulobelieve to be beautiful."   ~William Morris

Abigail ~ Watercolour Painting with Mixed Media, Dec. 2016
By Laura Leeder

Meet Abigail, the newest painting in my decorative art series.  This floral design was inspired in part by the classic and traditional art designs of the early art deco and victorian periods. Stylized motifs of flowers and leaves were as popular then as they are today.

These jewel-like flowers are also inspired by the many brooches that I collect. You'll note the inclusion of the pearl-like pattern, a recurring theme in several of my paintings.  It's a nod to this beautiful and precious gemstone that I adore.

The name Abigail is derived from the Hebrew name "Avigayil" meaning "my father's joy".  I chose this name for its historical reference but also because it sounds sophisticated and timeless and it felt "just right" for this painting which also has a "joyful" feeling to it.

Back In The Studio With A Bold Floral Design

Creative people are curious, flexible, persistent and independent with a tremendous spirit of adventure and a love of play!  ~Henri Matisse

I finally managed to carve out some studio time this week and started this bold, floral. I'm using my new Faber Castell PITT Artist Pen for outlining the blossoms and leaves.  I'm working on a 200lb cold press paper and the pen handles it quite nicely.

This painting style is a wonderful change from my usual process when painting my teacup and still-life paintings.  I tend to work more intuitively on these stylized florals, allowing myself to explore other mediums and taking more risks than I would otherwise.

Happy Friday everyone, have a great weekend!

Laura Leeder

New For Fall ~ Painting and Notecards Rich With The Colors Of Autumn

"Autumn paints in colors that summer has never seen."

Annabelle - Autumn Bliss Painting By Laura Leeder, Fall 2016

I've been experimenting with different mediums and floral designs.  This painting started out with watercolour and alcohol ink.  I then added a layer of acrylic paints and ink markers.  On the final layer, I've brushed on gelato paint sticks.  These add an interesting, creamy and iridescent texture that is quite pleasing!
The warm, rich colors of this painting were inspired by the maple leaves falling on the ground in my front yard and the pot's of chrysanthemums at my doorstep.

All occasion notecards.  Comes in a gift-packaged set of 6.

Forever Your's ~ A Commissioned Teacup Painting

"They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for."  ~Tim Bodett

"Forever Your's" Watercolour Teacup Painting by Laura Leeder, 2016 SOLD

This pretty and delicate teacup painting was done as a commission for a wedding gift for this summer past.  The client's only request was that I include a daisy in the teacup painting, as this is one of the brides favorite flowers.
White daisies symbolize innocence, purity, happiness, new beginnings and true love.  (An ideal flower to include in a wedding bouquet.)  The teacup pattern is inspired by one in a friend's collection and while it is not an exact match it is similar to the original including the pink ribbon.  When I inquired of the color of the bridesmaid dresses and learned that were pink, I knew I had chosen the perfect teacup!
The ribbon woven through the flowers on the teacup symbolizes "bringing together" or "tying the knot" as in marriage.  The lace cloth was also chosen for it's circular  "daisy like" pattern.  Forever Your's is a celebration of happiness!
Said the other, little daisy, "I am very well content
To live simply in the meadow where the sun and rain are sent;
Where the bees all gather sweetness, and the dew falls on my head,
And the radiance of the moonlight is all around me shed.
"The grass and clover blossoms admire my beauty all day long,
As I listen to the music of a bird's delightful song..."

She's here! Downton Abbey Fan's Meet Lady Edith

"It's beautiful to plant a flower in a garden, but, it's far more beautiful to plant love in someone's heart."

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage."   ~ Lao Tzu

@ Studio in the forest, July 2016, Laura Leeder

I've been working on my 3rd teacup painting in the Downton Abbey series along with a commissioned teacup painting at my studio in the forest.

@Lady Edith teacup painting in-progress

And here she is!
Downton Abbey's Lady Edith, Watercolour Teacup Painting
By Laura Leeder, August 2016

To represent Lady Edith, the second eldest Crawley daughter, I chose this vibrantly colored, modern floral teacup.  The battenburg lace it sits on is an elegant nod to this classic era. Nestled against the cup, is a lovely, delicate, blushing pink rose.  These perfectly sum up Edith's evolution from the long suffering and often overlooked, middle sister into the beautiful, confident, fashion forward Marchioness, we see at the end of the series.

In Edith's search for happiness, she is left at the altar by one suitor,  finds love with another, only to have him die tragically, leaving her with an illegitimate daughter, (a painful secret that she must keep for years).

In the final season Lady Edith finally gets her happy ending in spite of  Mary's cruel and calculated attempt to thwart it.  She ends up with a career as a magazine editor, has a dashing husband who is a marquis, a castle and her daughter Marigold accepted and loved in secrecy no longer.  She marries Bertie Pelham and becomes the titled Marchioness of Hexham.  It is like a modern day romance with a wonderful , fairy tale story book ending.

Downton Abbey Fans Meet Lady Mary

"It's beautiful to plant a flower in a garden, but, it's far more beautiful to plant love in someone's heart."

“Some women feel the need to act like they're never scared, needy or hurt; like they're as hardened as a man. I think that's dishonest. It's ok to feel delicate sometimes. Real beauty is in the fragility of your petals. A rose that never wilts isn't a rose at all.”  ~ Crystal Woods

Downton Abbey's Lady Mary, Watercolour Teacup Painting
By Laura Leeder, June 2016

Meet "Lady Mary" - the second painting in my new Downton Abbey Collection. This painting is based on the eldest Crawley daughter.  If you watched the series you'll know that Lady Mary's character was shown to be very cold, snobbish and mean, especially to her younger sibling, Lady Edith.  Through her romance and marriage with her first husband Matthew we see a softer side of Mary emerge. Kindness and vulnerability come to light.  After Mathews death, bitterness and sadness envelope her as she struggles to find meaning in her new life as a widow and single mother.

For Lady Mary, I chose from my collection, an English china teacup and saucer in a beautiful, cool, icy blue. The rim, handle and base of the cup is edged in rich gold, befitting a Lady of heritage and class.  Also like Mary, the large blue peony on the teacup is a cool and delicate beauty.  The peony itself, has a long heritage as does the Crawley family and their estate.  The yellow leaves on the cup suggest jealousy and envy while the green leaves can be seen to represent growth and renewal.  The one red flower blossom on the cup symbolizes Mary's deep affection for her son, her loyalty and commitment to both the staff and estate of Downton Abbey. The delicate red rose nestled against against the teacup symbolizes her new found love and marriage at the end of the last season along with the peace made and kindness shown to Lady Edith.

This original painting has been reproduced as a Limited Edition Giclee Print and as a Notecard
